The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has concluded its latest Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) session with significant progress toward global shipping decarbonization and environmental protection.
During the meeting held at IMO Headquarters in London, member states discussed strengthened measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships, improve operational energy efficiency, and support the maritime industry’s transition toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
The committee also emphasized the importance of improving Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) implementation, developing cleaner marine fuels, and enhancing environmental compliance across international fleets.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez highlighted the importance of international cooperation to maintain momentum toward sustainable shipping and environmental responsibility.
The new developments are expected to influence shipowners, operators, classification societies, and maritime stakeholders worldwide, particularly regarding future compliance requirements, vessel efficiency improvements, and environmental management systems.
At VNW Marine Services, we continuously monitor international maritime regulations and provide technical support, marine surveys, compliance assistance, and consultancy services to help shipowners and operators adapt to evolving IMO requirements.
